Welcome

I am compiling this 'crash course' for Leaving Cert. History to help you come up to speed but please remember, this is far from a complete series of lessons.

The Exam

Lets start with the most basic thing... Next June the Leaving Certificate will require you to submit an RSR worth 20% in mid-April. You have this well sorted.

                                                                                                                                    The Exam
DBQ - 20%
The exam itself starts with the DBQ. I would advise you to focus carefully on this and how it is answered. I will do a DBQ (All you need to Know Section) below.... If you remember, this is the one that you did already without an study or even knowing the topic!

Essays - 60%

United States and the Wider World 1945-1989 focuses on US History from 1945 and involves watching quite a few documentary clips.

Dictatorship and Democracy - Covers Europe from 1920-1945 - There are some but not too many documentaries and this requires more reading.

Northern Ireland 1945-1989 Starts with quite a bit of reading but also has a fair few documentaries.

Finally, Please pick a topic which you would like me to begin with!

The Document Based Question (DBQ)

ESSAY ONE: UNITED STATES AND THE WIDER WORLD

I would begin this topic by watching the following documentaries about each of the US Presidents and making sure to take notes and know the order in which they were President.

Essay One - Race Relations

Watch the Documentary below and try to understand the key events in US Race Relations.  Ensure that you know about each of the following:
  • Jim Crow Laws
  • Segretation (White Only/Colored)
  • Truman and de-segregation of the army
  • 1954 Brown v. Board of Education - ruled that segregation was illegal. (President was Eisenhower)
  • 1955 - Rosa Park and Montgomery Bus Boycott (Be able to write a number of paragraphs)
  • Eisenhower and the Little Rock Nine -1 957
  • 1963 March on Washington - Martin Luther King - I have a dream speech
  • 1964 - President Johnson signs Civil Rights Act outlawing discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, national origin.

Northern Ireland - Crash Course

Northern Ireland was established with the Government of Ireland Act of 1920.  The Course that we cover in Leaving cert History doesn't begin until 1949 but we always start it in 1947!

Here's the background however...

Through the 1920s and 1930s Catholics were discriminated against in Northern Ireland by the Protestant majority.  From the late 1930s however, World War Two gave employment to all.

Course begins:

World War Two ended in 1945 and in 1947 the new British Government decided to establish the Welfare State in The United Kingdom.  They decided to introduce it in Northern Ireland and it was seen as a thank you for their contribution in World War Two.  The Welfare State provides free education, health and Housing.  As you will find from the following essay, the Welfare state was controversial....

Apart from the controversy above in Education, Health and Housing, there was also trouble when it came to estabishing a new Third Level University to cater for the growing number of students completing third level Education.  Please learn about Terence O'Neill as he was Prime Minister of Northern Ireland during the Civil Rights Marches and during the Coleraine Controversy below.  The essay below explains the Coleraine Controversy:
